Statement from House Republican Floor Leader on Gas Tax Hike

FRANKFORT, Ky. (March 12, 2014) – House Republicans joined forces today in opposing a Democratic revenue plan in large part based on the proposed 1.5 cent per gallon increase in the state’s gas tax.
Republican Floor Leader Jeff Hoover said,"Today 44 Republicans and four Democrats voted in favor of my floor amendment to delete language from the revenue bill which proposes to raise the gas tax retroactively to the highest rate per gallon in the history of the Commonwealth.”
Leader Hoover added,"In 2009, when we last voted to establish a new floor for the gas tax, we made a commitment to the people of this Commonwealth that as the price of gas fell, the tax would fall as well. This measure is not in keeping faith with the pledge we made at that time. House Democrats took the position they wanted to raise the tax to maintain their unrestrained spending frenzy, that logic is simply short sided and unfair. While we were not successful in our efforts, we stood up for the people of Kentucky.”
